The rum industry, driven by sugarcane, faces huge challenges that demand action. Labor exploitation is widespread, with workers enduring poor conditions, exposure to harmful agrochemicals, and high rates of chronic illnesses among workers. While, indigenous communities are often displaced, and deforestation occurs to make way for sugarcane plantations, exacerbating social inequalities.
Environmentally, sugarcane field burning causes severe air pollution, soil degradation, and public health risks. The industry also places immense strain on water resources, with sugarcane being a highly water-intensive crop. These practices threaten both the sustainability of the industry and the well-being of communities.
We’ve made it part of our mission to work together on raising awareness and driving action by supporting ethical labor reforms, mechanized harvesting, sustainable farming practices, and water-efficient technologies is critical. By working together with Bonsucro we’re prioritizing social and environmental responsibility, in a way the rum industry can move toward a fairer, cleaner, and more sustainable future.
