Launching the Reserve Collection fills us with pride and joy. It has taken our team a lot of skill, effort and time to get the flavour to perfection. How appropriate is it to celebrate its launch with a handmade premium pack and handwritten certificate, stating proof that the bottle received, is part of the first released batch. This premium pack is designed by a local woodworker using up-cycled materials from the distillery.

Years before we launched Spirited Union, our founders selected a variety of tropically aged rum casks with a view to one day using them for something very special. Passionate about rum’s diversity, we’ve created an innovative and creative maturation method to complement this single origin rum and create a unique taste.
Inspired by the effect that subtle nuances of botanicals have on rum, Panama Reserve Rum embraces the hidden notes locked inside this single origin rum and enriches its flavours by finishing the liquid in our botanical rum cask.
The first edition of the Reserve Collection; the Panama Reserve Rum is a full bodied tropical aged rum with hints of liquorice and toffee. We elevate the character of the rum by giving it a final botanical cask finish with oak barrels that have been cultivated with a tincture of Ugandan vanilla. This ensures that the liquid is rounded to perfection and says an elegant goodbye while sipping.
For our first edition we have selected a tropical aged rum from Panama. The Panamanian rum is known for their soothing and silky style column still blends.
We have carefully selected our base rum from the Varela Hermanos distillery in the town of Pesé which was founded in 1908. Varela Hermanos is one of the few distilleries to still use molasses produced from estate grown cane. It is harvested by hand (cut in green), and there is no burning of the fields.
The Varela Hermanos company takes pride in their quality and also their social responsibility for their people and to protect their natural resources. These were important reasons for choosing their liquid, as they work by the same ethos as our Union.
We have carefully selected a Panamanian aged blend, ranging from 2 to 8 years to create a smooth flavour profile. At the distillery in Amsterdam, ex-bourbon oak barrels are pre-conditioned by steeping a vanilla tincture inside for weeks at a high alcohol percentage.
Next, the botanical tincture is removed and used for our regular range (we don’t like waste). The pre-conditioned barrels are filled with our Panamanian tropical aged blend and left to rest for about six months. This creates the delicate and refined botanical cask finish.
By donating 1% of our revenue to support the environment, social activism and contributing to responsible sugarcane production, we’re having a genuine, positive, impact in the communities we source from.
